How we verify
Funeral Home License Check is compiled from public records, not from who paid to be listed.
Sources
- DCA public license data: Cemetery and Funeral Bureau files — The Department of Consumer Affairs' monthly public license files for California funeral establishments, crematories, alkaline hydrolysis facilities and cemeteries.
- DCA License Search (Cemetery and Funeral Bureau) — California's own lookup.
- Connecticut DPH licensing data (data.ct.gov ngch-56tr) — Connecticut funeral home and crematory licenses with status and status reason.
- IDFPR Professional Licensing dataset (pzzh-kp68) — Illinois cemetery authority licenses under the Cemetery Oversight Act, with any discipline.
- Virginia DPOR Cemetery Board regulant list — Virginia licensed cemetery companies.

California: the Department of Consumer Affairs publishes the Cemetery and Funeral Bureau's license files once a month. Every week we look up the current files in DCA's public data folder and keep Funeral Director Establishment, Crematory, Alkaline Hydrolysis Facility and Certificate of Authority (cemetery) licenses with status Active and an unexpired date. Individual funeral directors, embalmers and cemetery staff are not listed.
Connecticut: every week we query the Department of Public Health's licensing data for Funeral Home and Crematory licenses with status Active, and show the state's status reason ("current" or "prior discipline") exactly as published. Illinois: every week we query IDFPR for licensed and partially exempt cemetery authorities with status Active and an unexpired date; fully exempt family, religious, small or inactive burying grounds are left out, and any discipline is shown exactly as recorded. Virginia: every week we download DPOR's current list of licensed cemetery companies.
License type, number, original issue date, expiry and address are shown as each state publishes them. Order within a city: longest-licensed first, then alphabetical. Status reasons and discipline never change the order.
None of the files includes prices, phone numbers or reviews, and we don't publish or estimate prices. We never mark a provider as unlicensed: one missing here may be licensed under another name, in a state we don't cover, or after our last refresh. Check the state's lookup.
Featured listings appear in a separate, labelled box and never change the order of the list. Featured placement is a flat monthly fee; we never charge per call, per family or per arrangement, and never take commissions.
What a badge means
State-licensed: the provider's license appears in the state's public licensing file with an active or current status (and an unexpired date where the state publishes one): California Cemetery and Funeral Bureau, Connecticut Department of Public Health, Illinois IDFPR or Virginia DPOR. We only publish positive matches. A listing without a badge is not an accusation — most gaps are name variations between registries.
Freshness
Data was last refreshed on 2026-10-16. DCA publishes California's Cemetery and Funeral Bureau files once a month; Connecticut, Illinois and Virginia publish more often. We re-pull all four every week.
